I researched illegal immigration, westerns, and the history of the west, every chance I got. Excerpts about Cowboy Smoke from my diary read: I’ve been working on The Cowboy (the title was The Cowboy before I decided on Cowboy Smoke) in my free time; I sent out an email to friends asking them their thoughts and feelings about illegal immigration; wrote thirty pages this weekend only to realize that I had no story; I love Paul Newman‘s turn in Hud; Clint Eastwood is a bad ass in A Fistful of Dollars, but Charles Bronson in The Good, The Bad, The Ugly is untouchable.
