I came up with the idea for the story on February 11, 2005. My journal from that day reads:

I just had this great idea. I want to make a western, but how to make it cool is the thing. Westerns are dead as…. Dead, right, so how do you make a western appealing to audiences? My idea was to make a western that’s not really a western to begin with but it slowly evolves to one over the course of the telling. The Idea is about a guy who has seen every western ever made and he wants more than anything to be a cowboy. He packs his shit and moves south to learn from the real deal. Over the course of the story he becomes this mythic cowboy, the hero in the western, just like he’s always wanted to be.
